This week I spoke at 1 Million Cups about my art and business. Thanks so much to the organizers and audience! Speaking was miles from my comfort zone, which I loved. I had been avoiding public speaking like the plague. Until this year, that is, when I changed my business plan to include public speaking … Read more the Value of Fear
Good Morning, I am excited about the in-progress painting that’s currently on my easel! These are the cows that live in the field next to us. Just being around cows is very soothing to me. Do you have that experience, too? I’m planning to make some nice glossy postcards with an image of this painting when … Read more Cows in progress and Giveaway
Here’s the beginning of Fall, next to the edge of Summer. Those lines are in there to make sure the series all flows together up on the wall. The funny thing is, I’m doing a lot of measuring, but I won’t actually be able to see them all together until they’re delivered. Because, although my studio … Read more Fall has begun (only in paint!) And end of a show.
Last week I took several new paintings over to the South Dakota Art Museum. Two of them are paintings of Yellowstone National Park. They framed up nicely, and I just love those paintings, so I’m excited to have them out where a collector can fall in love with them.
This is one of the most challenging paintings I’ve done, because it’s very conceptual. My son’s programming mentor was interested in a painting that will remind him of a crow that was a childhood friend, and which would talk to him from the barn roof. I ended up making a painting that looks fairly simple, but … Read more My Friend, commissioned painting

It’s a very grey day here, and I’m working on this painting of fall colors shining through the grey. Those greys are a challenge, but they’re so worth it. I’d love to hear from you if grey skies make you feel good, too. Other news: I’m helping someone preserve a childhood memory. On Tuesday the collector … Read more Fall colors, (progress photo). This is one of the lovely cows that lives to the North of Brookings. She was emerging after a bath in the river, and I really enjoyed the way her reflection mixed with grasses. More info Progress pictures:
I’ve been working on this painting for a couple weeks, and took progression photos. The block-in phase is one of my favorites, maybe because it’s full of so much possibility. I really like how this one came out. The differences at the end are subtle – the shadow colors, the grasses and edges and horse … Read more Horse paintings (available) Minnesota and South Dakota landscape paintings.
I really like this little painting of boys playing on a merry go round. The scene was so free and exciting; I’ve painted it many times. It was from a powwow we went to back in Washington, and there were lots of children playing on this old metal merry go round. Our son had so much … Read more Portrait painting: Boys on a Merry Go Round. Minnesota and South Dakota.

These are the same roses from yesterday, but this painting is so thick… There’s a lot of pallet knife work here. On a completely different topic, I’ve been waffling for years about how to categorize my paintings on my web site. I used to have them categorized by subject (landscape, figurative, still life, portraits), but … Read more Yellow roses painting (available). Minnesota and South Dakota artist.
I’ve changed around my still life setup and had a very nice painting time last night and this morning. I love these lovely yellow roses. This colorful painting is painted on gallery wrapped canvas with unpainted sides, and is ready to hang unframed. Email the Artist to inquire or purchase.
My experiment of trying to use my round pointed portrait brushes as my main paint brushes for still lifes was really interesting. I disliked it! My pallet and tools for still lifes and landscapes has become completely different from my pallet and brushes for portraits (or the other way around). So last week I set … Read more Fruit painting: pears. Minnesota and South Dakota paintings.
I’ve noticed that some vibrant greens and oranges and violets have been making appearances in my paintings occasionally. The last couple days I’ve been really enjoying that and going with it.
