RASCHE ART STUDIO events

November 18th, 10am – 4pm, 2017, Brookings Arts Council. Paintings flowers using oil paint.

This class is for oil painters of any level. I’ll walk you through one method for painting a simple still life setup, and we’ll talk about painting concepts and techniques. I’ll teach you all I can in one day. At the end of the day you will have the basic knowledge of how to set up an oil painting.

Below is a suggested supply list. If you have similar supplies, that will probably work just fine. Feel free to call / text or email with any questions. Sign up through the BAC at brookingsartscouncil.org.

Canvas –  3 – 8″ x 10″ wrapped or mounted canvases. You will use at least one canvas. It it would be nice to have an extra or two, in case you want to start more paintings. Better to have too many than too few. You can get canvas anywhere from Amazon to the SDSU art store to Walmart.

Sketch pad or paper – This will just be for planning your painting, so any paper will do. I’ll bring some typing paper for anyone who needs it.

A Pencil and a Pen – Bring a fat marker or sharpie. I’ll have some extras.

Paint – I use (mostly) Utrecht Artists Oil Paint, so my links go to Utrecht. You can find these or similar colors in the art store or on Amazon. The smallest sizes of the paints will be big enough for the class. If you’re wondering if paint you already have will work, feel free to contact me.

As a medium, I recommed GAMBLIN OIL MEDIUM-SLVNT FREE GEL. It doesn’t have the shine of oil, but it’s much healthier for you to use. I love this stuff.

Do not bring high VOC oil mediums to class.

A Pallet – It can be glass or wood or just pallet paper, but it should be flat (no cups for colors). I use a cheap picture frame with glass in it for my travel pallet. There are a variety of travel pallets at the art store.

Brushes – these are currently my favorite, sold from this page at Jerry’s Artarama.

  • Series 1003 Filbert, # 2, 37993 and
  • Series 1001 Flat, # 8, 37978

Brush Cleaning – some paper towels or an old t-shirt, Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS), and an air tight container for the OMS. You can get one specifically for that purpose (SEALABLE BRUSH WASHR-SMALL) or use a glass jar with a lid that tightens well. Note that OMS does not fly, so if you order it online, give it some travel time.
