Canvas Party March 19th! And beginning of a portrait

March 19th (Saturday) from 10am-12:30, $30, limit 10 people.
Brookings, SD.

No experience necessary, all supplies supplied, and fun for all.

Click here and select “Announcements about Canvas Parties and Workshops” to stay informed (https://madmimi.com/signups/114997/join), or call or email to sign up.

I’m working on creating the template flower painting now – that will be posted in the next few days.

In less than one month I’ll have my first canvas party, in the style of the “Wine and Canvas” events but probably with non alcoholic drinks and cookies – and with a limit of 10 people for the first event. The painting will be a flower painting – I’ll post the exact painting as soon as I finish it!

I’ve been thinking about doing this for over two years and realized I need to set a date and do it!

It’s three weeks away and I’m already scrambling. I’ve talked to someone who runs these successfully for advice, a tax consultant, have a call in to the state to see what I need to do for licensing, I’ll get my supplies ordered today… And my son is helping me figure out how big of a table we need to build, and I’m looking for easels…

Here’s my beautiful studio space in Brookings, SD where it will be located – it will be transforming!

My lovely friend Erika and her daughter came over to model for me last weekend, and I got a great color sketch and source photos, and am very much looking forward to working on some paintings of them. Yay! Thank you!

Pet portrait, memorial dog portrait. South Dakota artist.

I took a bunch of photos of the painting process for a couple of my paintings. Here is the process I followed for capturing Presley’s likeness and personality. I was very attached to her by the end of the process! I really enjoy seeing how artists approach paintings – I hope you find this interesting.

Dancing Ladies, 5×5″ oil painting of violets, available.

I had no idea violets were so wild before painting these ladies. I am becoming very fond of them. This small painting is on mounted gessoboard with shallow wood sides, and is ready to either hang unframed or to frame. $100.  Click here for more information.

I’ll be doing the drawing to give away a portrait this week, and it will be announced in my newsletter. Yay! Thank you so much to all my new subscribers and to everyone who shared!!! I really appreciate it!

Large farm and prairie painting on canvas. Minnesota and South Dakota landscape paintings.

Click here to see larger image and more info.

A few added yellow and orange pallet knife marks in the grass, so that the angular pallet knife marks in the wild trees in the background are echoed in the foreground, and this painting is complete.

I was overwhelmed by the response to this painting, with over 200 likes between the couple posts I put out about it, and some emailed comments too. Thank you so much!

As you may have noticed, growing the number of collectors and potential collectors on my newsletter list is my top business priority this year. If you have any suggestions about how to do that, please let me know!

The winner of the drawing last week hasn’t contacted me, so this week I’m giving away two prints! The winner can choose a print of either My Wild Heart or Girl Next Door, winner’s choice! I hope that shows my appreciation?

PLEASE SHARE!

Cow painting (available). Minnesota and South Dakota landscape paintings.

Happy Valentines Day! I’m feeling super grateful for my wonderful husband, son, family and friends.

This morning I finished Girl Next Door. This is another luxuriously thick painting with a lot of brush strokes and pallet knife marks. I uploaded the detail photo to show the thickness and texture. Click here for more info.

The giveaway for this Friday will be a print of this painting! I’m really trying to grow my newsletter subscribership, so PLEASE share with your friends! I’ll draw from all newsletter subscribers – girl-next-door-detail

Yellow Grass, in progress

I am trying to be true to my messy, complicated way of seeing things, and used a lot of different tools (and a tun of paint!) to create this painting… And while I was painting the grass I was thinking about how similar grass that’s changing color looks to a pond with reflections…

Horse painting: horses playing in a pasture. Minnesota and South Dakota landscape paintings.

These horses were having a good time at our friends farm and the day and light were so beautiful. I took a bunch of photos that day and this is the 5th one I’ve painted from. Some days the light is just extra paintable.

I had a hard time naming this painting, and my son came up with this title.

This painting is ready to frame. See a larger image here.

Yellow roses painting (available). Minnesota and South Dakota artist.

These are the same roses from yesterday, but this painting is so thick… There’s a lot of pallet knife work here.

On a completely different topic, I’ve been waffling for years about how to categorize my paintings on my web site. I used to have them categorized by subject (landscape, figurative, still life, portraits), but changed it to size / price range (huge paintings, medium and large paintings, small gems). I think I liked the first way better. What do you think?

This colorful painting is painted on mounted canvas, and is ready to frame (unframed). $180.

Email the Artist to inquire or purchase. Larger image.
