“Caden”, oil painting in progress, Minnesota and South Dakota portrait artists

This painting is very close to done, but still in progress. It’s the time between when a painting seems almost done and when it’s actually done that often takes the most time, for me.

After just finishing a big portrait painting last week (which came out really well, but I forgot to take a photo before handing it off), I wanted to do a painting of my son that is sort of an anti-portrait. He’s reading Calvin and Hobbes while the puppy looks out the window. I’m really happy with how this painting is coming out – with┬áthe design and color-shapes; but there are some little things I really want to finesse.

Contact me about a portrait or (anti-portrait).

Running Free, Happy New Year!

Running Free, 16×20 in oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas. Learn more about flower paintings here.

Last year I had a goal of painting much larger than I ever had before, and finished 3 48×60″ paintings. One thing that I’m really happy about with that project is that there was really room for the abstract quality of my work to come out – from all the way across the room.

I’ve wanted to paint larger paintings of flowers and other still life objects for some time, and have given it several starts over the years, but I was never satisfied enough to post one. I think I really needed to paint those big landscapes (and give a lot of thought to the big painting questions) before making a large still life that I’m satisfied with. But now I am, and here it is. What do you think?
