Sold. Herding Apples – benefit auction

“Herding Apples” / 6×6 in / oil on linen /SOLD

100% of the final bid will be donated to the charity Every Mother Counts. This is a great cause. Click here to see all of the art being auctioned.

The need: Every 90 seconds, a women dies from childbirth. Fully 90% of those deaths are preventable. The Aid organization Every Mother Counts is training midwives in Afghanistan, opening health clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo and shipping unused medical supplies to South Sudan. These are tangible, practical projects designed to combat maternal mortality and injuries worldwide.

I tried something different today – a low key painting, and very warm analogous colors – yellow, orange, red and red-violet. Because this painting was for the Every Mother Counts auction (charity), I wanted to do a still life setup that looked a little like a mom and kids. Hope you like it!

By the way, aren’t these apples beautiful? We picked them of the trees at Walters Ranch; they’re plum size and shape and color!

horse paintings by portrait artist

“Riding Out” / 6×6 in / oil on linen / gallery of available figurative paintings

This pony, and the horse from yesterday, were both rescued animals from neglectful situations. They were so sweet and gentle. The pony gave lots of children rides around this Eastern Washington apple and peach orchard.

This one I finished alla prima (wet on wet). So fun! I liked finishing in one sitting so much I may wake up at 3am more often. Making this background so sparse was a huge stretch for me… I’m excited about how it worked.

Thank you so much for the encouragement yesterday, and since I started this blog!

I love giving back a little – so there’s going to be another painting giveaway soon (when I get to 250 FB fans – only a few more to go!). Everyone who Likes me on FB, and everyone who is on my ‘monthly’ mailing list, and anyone who shares this post (let me know if you do) before I hit the 250 fans milestone, will be entered into a drawing for a free painting (shipping included)!

horse paintings by portrait artist: Progress – Horse Ride

This little painting has been in the “almost done” phase for a few days now, but I still have changes to make. I’ve started sketching in a big painting based on this…

I’ve been working on this small painting for a couple weeks. I work for hours tweaking, refining, generalizing – and if I feel really successful, it looks quick and gestural. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

horse paintings Progress

Sometimes I work straight through on one painting, but a lot of times I start several paintings and then finish them all at about the same time. Do other artists work that way? It’s like I have starting momentum and finishing momentum and they’re different animals. Anyways, I’ve been in the starting mode lately. There are three paintings I’m really excited about – one of a landscape with some road workers, one of a landscape with red barns, and one of my son on a horse.

This has been a really busy month – traveling to South Dakota and Minnesota where we were guests at a big fun wedding that started at 2pm and then the party went into the night. When we got back my dad came for a visit. The highlight for me was a great kickball / softball game in the front yard with a lot of base-stealing, chasing, and laughing.
