My son and my mom and her dogs and I went for several walks ‘on the mountain,’ and every time we drove back down I was taken by this scene with a barn-house and these beautiful colors.

I did a fair amount of rearranging elements for artistic reasons – mostly in the mountains. I am really happy with the design elements in this painting – the receding green-blue-aqua-blue violet colors as well as the bare land that repeats in the foreground and on that first mountain. I am really happy with this painting!

On the drive home from my mom’s house a few weeks ago, we passed this area of farmland, where I could just see the striped area behind the near hills. I really enjoy striped farmlands for some reason.

With this painting I tried out water soluble oil paints, again. It felt a little like painting with gouache. I like some of the qualities of this paint – the vibrancy, and something I can’t really put my finger on. But it will definitely take some getting used to.

While we were visiting my mom, she took us up to a walking path on Mt Emily several times. It was beautiful up there – especially when looking down on the valley below. My son ran and ran on the trail and could have kept on running the trail all day…

I love the way grasslands on the Eastern side of Oregon and Washington turn somewhere between red and green in certain months. Can you see the little bits of town rught at the bottom of the mountain?

My son and I went for a walk a couple weeks ago on a trail along the Little Spokane river. It’s a beautiful trail where sometimes you can see the river and sometimes it’s just a densely pine tree shaded path.

In this painting you can see a little glimpse of the river and a house in the distance. I really like the way the tall trees on the left came out – I think those are my best trees so far, especially that red one. Sky-holes (where you can see sky or background through the greenery on a tree) are really hard for me, and I am always so pleased when it comes out just right.

I really got a lot of paintings – landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes / cloud formations out of our vacation in the San Juan Islands a few months ago and the drive home. Now I’m getting really excited about the colors and lushness of Eastern Washington. There is a series of very large paintings of a neat area about 8 miles from home that has been increasingly itching at me for the last couple weeks…

This is a painting of huge huge pine trees and green grass. The photo is a bit blurry; I’ll re-take it outside. Can you find all three people? This was a beautiful spot, and I wanted to capture that neat atmosphere, and the scale of the trees.

“Ducks, painting in progress” – 24×36 – oil on canvas

I started this painting some time ago and then put aside. This is a painting of the ducks at Rattlesnake Ridge swimming in the reedy river, with some bare trees behind them.

I can’t tell if it’s a “false start” or not, mainly because I like the wild dark reflection in the water. It seems like it has potential, but also some basic issues. Any ideas?

It’s based on Orcas Island II, but I wanted to explore the pink colors more. There’s a really nice glow to the trees on the right. All those shapes in front of the near island are sail boats. Can you see the ferries in front of the more distant island?

I’m really enjoying this color scheme, and all the character of the crow.This guy is standing in the grass looking out at the trees at the edge of the grassy field. It was beautiful and sunny.
