I’ve started up several paintings of oranges and satsumas; this is the first to get finished. What’s it doing there? It’s sitting on brown paper. The brown paper is evading me and I’m going to make more tries at it. That’s a little piece of tape off on the far left.

100% of the final bid will be donated to the charity Every Mother Counts. This is a great cause. Click here to see all of the art being auctioned.

The need: Every 90 seconds, a women dies from childbirth. Fully 90% of those deaths are preventable. The Aid organization Every Mother Counts is training midwives in Afghanistan, opening health clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo and shipping unused medical supplies to South Sudan. These are tangible, practical projects designed to combat maternal mortality and injuries worldwide.

I tried something different today – a low key painting, and very warm analogous colors – yellow, orange, red and red-violet. Because this painting was for the Every Mother Counts auction (charity), I wanted to do a still life setup that looked a little like a mom and kids. Hope you like it!

By the way, aren’t these apples beautiful? We picked them of the trees at Walters Ranch; they’re plum size and shape and color!

In this painting I wanted to convey the sticky quality of the empty jam jar. And in front of the jar is another one of those lovely red unpolished apples – you can see that it’s half-way polished just from my moving it around in the still life, trying to get a nice arrangement.

The jam color is actually similar to the colors I used in this cantelope painting, also painted on wood.

On a side note, the show at c’est la Vie in Edmonds went well. There was a good turnout and I got very positive feedback about my paintings. 15 of my small daily paintings and a couple 16×20 studio landscapes are up for another few weeks, so you still have time to see it if you are in the area and missed the opening (I took my two biggest paintings down so that I can show them next week in Spokane).

In this painting I worked to convey the dusty quality of these pretty apples. They are fresh off a friend’s tree, and bright patches show through where hands have touched them. Oil on wood, 6 in x 8 in.

This painting has a similar technique / paint quality to a previous oil painting of flowers and apples.

My photo is not very good, I’m afraid. I’ll upload a new photo in a few days.
