“Road To La Grande” 36×24 inch oil painting on canvas (#3351)

My son and my mom and her dogs and I went for several walks ‘on the mountain,’ and every time we drove back down I was taken by this scene with a barn-house and these beautiful colors.

I did a fair amount of rearranging elements for artistic reasons – mostly in the mountains. I am really happy with the design elements in this painting – the receding green-blue-aqua-blue violet colors as well as the bare land that repeats in the foreground and on that first mountain. I am really happy with this painting!

Fair, oil painting on canvas

“Fair” – approx 8×11 inches – oil painting on canvas

This is a painting of huge huge pine trees and green grass. The photo is a bit blurry; I’ll re-take it outside. Can you find all three people? This was a beautiful spot, and I wanted to capture that neat atmosphere, and the scale of the trees.

This is a little piece of Eastern Washington, off I-90, in the dusk. You can see the sun shining through the tops of the trees, and the green and red colors of the shadowed field. Even though there isn’t much sky up there, this painting is about light in the sky.

I was jury-accepted into the Little Spokane River Artist Studio Tour, which will be on September 25, 2010. It’s a talented group of artists; I’m excited that they accepted me. I’ll post more about that as it gets closer.

I went for a walk with my son by this winding river, which was sometimes obscured by the trees and sometimes visible. It was beautiful with the spring colors.

This painting is my attempt to capture the wild, dramatic clouds that were over Eastern Washington most of our drive home a couple weeks ago. It was really lovely and awe inspiring to see.

The last couple days have been really rough, painting wise. I spent 2 days before today working on this painting… yesterday I started sketching and sketching to get my values and shapes right, and got a sketch I really liked. So this afternoon followed my sketch very closely, and it came together nicely. I started by wiping off about 2/3 of the painting. I really like the nice glow that the gesso-ed wood gets when day-old paint is wiped off, so that was a good start. And while painting I mostly worked on keeping my values straight. I’m really happy with this one.

Today was a re-do of yesterday’s painting. Still a little over-vibrant, but I’m happier with the light and shadow on the trees.

Yesterday I decided to paint in the living room in fairly dim light. And yesterday I also started using a more limited pallet than usual (only 3 colors and white) and was really frustrated that I couldn’t get a good green or orange. Anyways, I thought that my yellow was too transparent to hold up against the red or blue. Then I walked into my studio to put the painting up for drying, and was *shocked* by how very green the greens were. Yikes!

As soon as I saw the painting I laughed at myself. Of course yellow disappears first when it gets dark. Ha ha.

On the way home the clouds and wind were amazing. When we stopped at a rest stop and opened up the truck door, it almost flew off. I wanted to capture that rain cloud and the atmospheric effect. This has some of the same colors as Orcas Island II in the mountains…

Orcas Island V, father and son walking (Peaceful People SERIES) (#3322)

On our last day of vacation we went to the big park on Orcas. You can drive up to the top of the hill/mountain, walk a little ways up a steep incline to a tower on the edge of a cliff, way way up (it was too foggy to see how far up we were), and then climb up to the top of a tower and look out to the end of the earth. I have a slight fear of heights and had an adrenaline overload by the time we got back down to water level. But it was beautiful and magical. The fog rolled in and out, giving the place a mysterious, other-worldly feel. This is a painting of my guys walking ahead of me up to the tower. I wanted to capture that sweet hand-holding.
